Economic Environment

GDP

In 2004 and 2005, Slovakia had one of the highest GDP growth rates in the EU reaching 6%. In 2006, the year-to-year growth amounted to unexpected 9.8% in the 3-rd quarter, which helped to increase the overall annual economy growth expectation for 2006 from 6%/6.5% to at least 7.7%. The 9.8% growth in 2006 can be partly contributed to the launch of production of a new Peugeot SA plant. The growth came as a surprise to local analysts, given that another big foreign investor Kia launched its production only in late 2006.

Labor market.

The key law governing employment is the Labour Code. Under the Code, all employers in the Slovak Republic must have written employment contracts with their employees concluded for a limited or unlimited period.

The maximum working time is 40 hours/week.

The minimum annual holiday is four weeks.

Inflation

Inflation in Slovakia has recently been at low levels, hitting 2.4 % in fall 2006, which has contributed to a growth in domestic demand.

Investment Incentives

Slovakia has been encouraging foreign direct investors to invest in rapidly developing Slovak economy, which is supported by:

- Law on Foreign Direct Incentives in place;

- Tax rate of 19% (flat);

- Booming real estate market (in particular in Bratislava and surrounding locations), high appreciation rate;

- Speedy and efficient access to surrounding countries and Europe (only 50 km. from the city of Vienna);
- A skilled labor force with technological expertise;
- Significantly lower labor costs;
- Double Taxation Treaties;
- A member of EU and international organizations;

"The good lawyer is not the man who has an eye to every side and angle of contingency, and qualifies all his qualifications, but who throws himself on your part so heartily, that he can get you out of a scrape".
